Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. While a small girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately being a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
